Jackson's lead is more buttery smooth than ever. Marcus molds amazingly well with the group dynamic. Jake's bass is more crisp and defined. Joey is bald. The boys are back in form.
I don't know if that weird scale has a name, but if you start at C and go up the octave and only sing the black keys on the piano, that's what that scale is. One thing I(Joey) did not know before was that the accidental solfege syllables have different names depending on if you are ascending or descending, which made it that much more difficult to learn and fun to sing. I practiced this in my shower everyday for two months.
hi joey! just sat at the piano a bit, and I think the scale is like C Locrian (in the case of that arrangement it would be F#) but without the 4.... Locrian omit 4 LOL idk but yea, theory is fun :) I could talk about theory for ever and ever and ever
THE HARMONICS AT THE END?? NF4 has improved so much as a quartet over the years, they've always been my favorite and I'm really happy to see them on stage again !
I've run into Marcus a couple times at my school (he works as a sound tech) and I always do a double take cause I'm like "oh that's Marcus.... WAIT how do I know Marcus"
The lyrics are genius lol. That disastrous reinterpretation of Do Re Mi here is going to be stuck in my head forever. One of my favorite comedic bits was at 5:03 where every last ounce of patience flew out of Jackson's body and he stops singing halfway. Comedy aside, love their singing again!
I don't think a lot of people appreciate how intricate this performance is. This is the type of performance you can watch endlessly and never get bored. Seriously! Try watching it four times paying attention only to what one of them is doing throughout. Side note: I really love the "chemistry" between Jake and Marcus throughout the whole contest, tbf
@samprice1598 they're trying to teach him a basic major scale, but instead he does every non-major syllable in both directions. You can hear all the music theory nerds in the crowd gasp. As they said, "He didn't not do it".
4:09 - I’m watching this in 2024. Something I’m noticing is that their comedy beats have more “object permanence.” When they’re mimicking the presence of a physical item (like the drumsticks) they’re more likely to physically give a reason why they’re not using them after the beat. Here, Marcus makes drumsticks show up out of nowhere and Jake throws them away. Earlier, they’re showing Ti by drinking from teacups and they all toss the teacups behind them. It’s small, but freaking genius!
I don't know how else to describe it, but that Do Re Mi at 1:28 was absolute pure magic. ... ...followed by the utter carnage of Joe Re Mi! it's seriously butter smooth and amazing, I wish there was some way to hear NF4 do the whole scale in that same smooth magic. Maybe it's because Jake gets a bit louder and we can hear him more? Either way, awesome job guys!
This whole contest was some of the best performance and acting from this group. Jackson’s face after Joey did the wrong but not wrong scale is comedy gold! On top of it swapping parts, Joey killing it on tenor, the addition of Shipoopi being just a flawless inclusion, and the timing on everything was so perfect.
I discovered this group by accident (The Bare Necessities parody, where The Bare Necessities was one of my all-time favorite songs from childhood), but I have fallen in instant love with them! They take me back to my high school and college days where I was in men's octet (double barbershop, baritone in high school, bass in college), and I LOVE the comedic renditions! Signed, your newest fan!
There are certainly great performances by many quartets, but NF4 is my go to favorite. I'm stuck on them. Love, love, love these guys. Always fun to watch and memorable. Makes me want to know and sing with them if I could. I assume by now that BHS knows what a huge asset they are, as I've seen other comments saying it was NF4 who influenced some young singers to get into singing in the first place. No higher compliment.
@@MartinDoyleUK Missed the context on that one. I'm saying the NF4 is everyone's favorites besides the judges themselves who don't think they're ever a top 5 group
@@TwoToneShoesmy apologies. I’m British, so most things out of my mouth are flippant, bad puns or sarcastic. I forget how badly it comes across online sometimes.
As an enthusiastic but relatively novice choral singer (two years now, having started in my mid 30s with zero prior music experience,) watching this ripped my soul from my body.
I still can't believe that Joey pulled off that scale at 4:33. Here are the notes (I believe) for anyone wondering. (All in F#) Upwards: Do Di Ri Fi Si Li Do Downwards: Do Te Le Se Me Ra Do
Wait, they reformed?! Just without Ryan Wisniewski now, I guess. Followed em through the pandemic and it was rather sad to see how that took a toll on em eventually having to have the group to disband. As Ryan's moved on to other stuff in life along with him being a singing trainer, hope he's happy, and is dearly remembered. Welcome to Marcus Carline! Been with em since 2022 it seems. Fits the group like a glove.
Most videos on this channel struggle to break 1000 views but these guys consistently have thousands. It just speaks volumes about how entertaining they are
@@alexchannonIndo not using these scales, probably Indian, it almost goes to Raga Puriya Daneshri scale where he sing F# G A# B# Cx Dx Ex (x goes whole tone up instead of usual # only goes up semitone/half tone), just except last two note… or it could be almost whole tone scale, just the second note only up a semitone instead whole tone scale.

What an amazing performance. The inflections are so good, the way he lingers on certain syllables as if trying to get in the last word really works with the character
I love Joey so much! He's the funniest member of the group and never fails to make me laugh. Love y'all and I hope to see you perform in person one day!
Since 2019 they've made a big step in the professionalism of their performance. Every little moment of this is so carefully planned and practiced and it's thick with comedy and clever little musical moments, yet it feels fresh and uncomplicated. Outstanding performance. Why do Jake and Joey look at each other at 3:28? It looks very deliberate. Are they coordinating for the next section?
Absolutely the best 👌🏻👌🏻 it's always such fun to figure out what jokes they're pulling off and they do it so naturally hahah even their gaston/jackson version was absolutely brilliant and now a song for joe it's just the best 👌🏻👌🏻

@BarbershopHarmony Give Joey's comment a well deserved pin 📌
Pentatonic?

Yes, it’s basically a Gmaj scale, starting on the 7th (F#) and omitting the 4th (B), so it’d be F# Locrian while omitting the 4th scale degree
3:39 I loved Joey keeping the thumb movement going as they said "it is not his fault he is stupid".
i love how this connects to the bare necessities parody they did

I am currently in the quartet for my college’s performance of Music Man, and the sudden switch to Shipoopi just made me lose it😭
THANK YOU! I could not quite get what it was!
that made me smile too... down to the little dance jig as well.
My son was in that quartet twice! It stays with you forever and that's a GREAT thing!!!! Don't hold back and Enjoy!!!
Just finished a high school performance of this lol. Funnily enough, I was in the barbershop quartet for the play. The dancing number was fun. :)
5:40 Jo stops at Ti because Jackson at Ti at 1:55 when demonstrating how to do it :D
The "Me" followed by the head snap and the "WHAT" and "NO" by Jake and Marcus immediately after at 3:12 is my favourite part of this entire song
@@AlwaysHungryAlwaysThirsty Jake my bad got the names mixed up

Thanks for pointing this out! Was a buttery smooth transition into his Tenor... awesome stuff.
I’m so glad trumpet boy let him sing lead for once 😂
4:33 I think I literally screamed in my living room watching the livestream. Brilliant writing and from out of nowhere

Softedging
So glad these lads are back.
The Newfangled Four are incredibly talented, but above all - they are absolutely amazing at taking things we know and making them funny. Well done.

Today I learned that Joey Buss can twerk better than I can
I wonder if he had to practice for this song XD
Just so it's written down somewhere:

Fa, a note that follows Joe.

Mi, am I good or no? (No!)

Fa, a note that FA-lows Joe. I caught it on my 10th (or so) viewing.
